Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
It was August 31st, 2007. Projekt Revolution. I had rode in a car hours to Indianapolis. On the way there, our rental car was almost hit by a semi truck, yet all I wanted to do was get to the concert. I remember that day like it happened yesterday. I was beyond excited to be there. I watched nearly ever band on the side stage, before going over and trying to meet a few of the bands with my friend and my big sister. I remember Saosin being late to their signing. I quickly hurried off after meeting them, because I wanted to meet Madina Lake with a burning passion. As soon as we got over there, the security guard tells us that the meet and greet is closed. I was disappointed until I heard their bassist, Matthew, spoke up. I recall him telling the security guard to let my sister and myself in. He even stayed back from more then just an autograph. Matthew stayed back, took a few pictures and talked with us. It was more than I ever hoped for. I could tell that this man was not your typical “rockstar”. He IS genuine.
I was really hoping that this morning I would wake up from “just another nightmare” and that what I had read last night wasn’t true. But sadly, it remains true. When first heard about what happened to Matthew, I got this horrible feeling in my stomach and I could finish Nathan’s blog, let alone the AP article online, before the tears came. The words running through my head over and over. “Madina Lake bassist beaten unconscious”. “…left Matthew unconscious on the street”. “…currently hospitalized and had to have a third of his skull removed due to swelling in his brain.” And that it occurred to me…imagine what I was feeling times one million, and that’s how I knew it probably is for Nathan and that was heartbreaking.
As I thought about this, one strand of lyrics ran through my head as well: “Questioning my faith in God, I know evil exist.” Sometimes, the worst things happened to the best of people. Matthew attempted to stop an issue that shouldn’t be happening. He IS and always will be a true hero. And with all that said:
All my prayers, wishes, and hopes go out to Matthew Leone.
